Build v0.018 — HUD rewrite, navigation gear and difficulty settings

A large rewrite of the HUD, three new navigation items — compass, GPS and minimap — plus difficulty settings that change both what you can see and what you are fighting.

The headline for 0.018 is a large HUD rewrite, and most of the new features hang off it. Navigation is now a set of items you have to actually be carrying rather than information you get for free, and difficulty is no longer a single number.

Three linked additions:

  • Compass item added
  • GPS device item added
  • Minimap functionality added, with icons for zombies, special zombies and NPCs

The important part is the dependency. The compass item is required for the compass, and the GPS device is required for the minimap. Lose them, leave them behind, or fail to pick them up, and you navigate without them.

Difficulty affects what you see, not just what hits you

Two new difficulty settings:

  • Zombie health is multiplied by the difficulty level
  • On the hardest setting, enemies no longer appear on the minimap at all

That second one turns the GPS from a convenience into a comfort you have chosen to give up. Difficulty level is now also visible in the inventory so you can check what you signed up for.
